In order to better grasp where gambling laws and gambling legislation in the U.S. Is going, it’s best to understand from where we’ve come. Has a long history of gambling and sports betting, despite the fact that sports betting has often flouted gambling regulations and anti-gambling laws. Gambling games were also played in ancient China, where poker is attributed to have originated. When Columbus first came to America in 1492, Native Americans were participating in their own gambling games by wagering on the outcome of sporting events on a game resembling Lacrosse. The origin of gambling can be traced back to the Greek mythology in the division of the Universe; Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon did this by playing “Throw the dice”. Particularly, the use of dice can be dated back to around 40,000 years and dice games have been in existence since then.

In 1910 Nevadashut the door on gambling which left horse race wagering the only legal entityin America. In 1912 Arizona and New Mexico were granted statehood under thecondition that gambling remains outlawed. During 1920’s prohibition thepublics’ thirst for gambling matched that of alcohol. Casinos went undergroundalong with the speakeasies. In 1931 Nevada legalized gambling again and wouldremain the only state to do so until the latter half of the century. Gambling flourishedunderground as organized crime made heavy investments in Nevada, and prosperedby controlling off track horse bettingand the numbers lottery. Duringthe 1950’s the U.S. Senate investigated organized crime’s link to illegalgambling. Eventually the mob departed Vegas. States put bookies out of businessby legalizing off track betting and numbers games. Atlantic City legalizedgambling in 1976, and the Indian Gaming Act was approved by congress inthe 1980’s which allowed casinos on reservation land. Gambling history has evolved to the following: The AmericanGaming Association reports that there are 832,988 slot machines spread out over1,151casinos across 44 states with more on the way.
